It’s fairly common knowledge at this point that Jewish writers and artists have been the creators of some of the most popular superheroes and comic books of the past eighty years. But what about what happens in the pages of those comic books? You may be shocked to see the explicitly Jewish content contained within, ranging from a superhero wedding under a chuppah to Shabbat prayers recited on the eve before battle. Together, we’ll look at Judaism in comic books, compare it to textual sources, and the importance of representation, even when it’s drawn in. Join Rabbi Brandon Bernstein for the most colorful text study of all time! Rabbi Bernstein was the campus rabbi of Northwestern University Hillel and the host of the podcast “Funny, They Don’t Look Jewish,” exploring explicit instances of Judaism within comic books.
