Group meetings with clergy for parents and students

Mitzvah project proposal form due to the Associate Rabbi.

Prayer Review

The Coordinator of Youth and Family Engagement will schedule the first prayer review meeting.

D'vrei Torah Sessions

You’ll be scheduled with d’vrei Torah sessions with the rabbis. You should also order kipot for your guests if you are providing them.

8 weeks before

4 – 6 weeks before

Photography and Mitzvah Project

You will continue your D’var Torah preparation meetings with the Rabbis, turn in your completed mitzvah project form, order videotaping of services (if desired), arrange for photographs to be taken, and make sure that all Temple accounts are current. 

Mastering Prayers

Your child should have all prayers, Haftorah, Torah portions mastered. Now is also the time to decide on honorees, let them know that they’ve been chosen, and forward a copy of the Torah blessings to your honorees. 

4 weeks before

2 – 4 weeks before

Usher Arrangement

Arrange to have 2 Temple members usher at the Friday night service before the bar/bat mitzvah. Your child will have their final prayer review and sisterhood will contact you regarding flowers for the bimah.

Final Run Throughs

Your child will run through the service, carry the Torah Scroll, and chant from the Scrolls with the Associate Cantor (and their partner). You may also begin to consider what remarks you might make, if any, to your child from bimah

Final Aliyot Honors

Make sure you return your completed “Aliyot Bar/Bat Mitzvah Honors” sheet to Rabbi Sagal’s assistant. You may also want to remind your Friday night ushers to be at the Temple 30 minutes before the service starts and check in with the clergy for instructions.

Final Rehersal

You will attend the full bar/bat mitzvah rehearsal with the cantor or associate cantor at 4:45 PM (or another pre-arranged time). Make sure you bring all materials for the service, including the d’var Torah.

Friday Night Service

Your ushers will check in with the clergy 30 minutes before the start of the service while your family will meet in the rabbi’s study 15 minutes prior to the start of the service. Then you will participate in the Shabbat evening service. 

Your child's special day

If you are not taking pictures at the Temple, come to the Temple 30 minutes before the service starts. Make sure you bring an extra copy of the d’var Torah just in case and written remarks that the parents may have prepared. Remember to relax and enjoy this beautiful rite of passage. MAZEL TOV!
