Kol Hakavod (great job) to our Blankets of Love committee, which last week donated 36 beautiful blankets to Camp Happy Times, a free one week sleep-away camp in Pennsylvania for children age 5 – 21 who have, or have had cancer. They enjoy the week of sleep away camp where they can be more like campers and less like cancer patients. This year’s donation brought us over the 500 blanket threshold mark since it’s inception. The Camp is funded by the Valerie Fund. Blankets of Love was formed in 2004 and led by chair Jane Berlant. Blankets of Love participants provide their own materials and knot and/or crochet their own projects. At times, they make 12″ squares, which are assembled as a group blanket project.
Camp Happy Times’ Mission is to promote friendship, independence, and a spirit of cooperation for cancer patients and survivors. The CHT’s Philosophy is to provide a recreational and therapeutic environment that engages participation while building self-esteem, confidence, trust and friendship. Campers are encouraged to take on the challenges of various daily activities. For many, this is their first time away from home and CHT offers a comforting place that encourages the development of campers. Lifelong bonds are established between kids who know what it’s like to be diagnosed with cancer. For more information about Camp Happy Times, please click here.
