Saturday Mornings at our Temple are so very special. Most Shabbat mornings, in the Sanctuary and the Chapel, our wonderful B’nai Mitzvah students are standing before their family and friends and leading the congregation in prayers, teaching what they learned, and reading from the Torah for the first time.
There are other sorts of learning & reading happening at the Temple during that time. We welcome recent refugees to learn – learn English, learn our culture, learn our history, and learn our way of life. We also welcome these families to laugh, play and sing, study, do crafts, play games, and do homework together. And we welcome & teach them to be a part of our community, as new friends and new Americans.
They are, like our ancestors, who not long ago were strangers in our country and to our way of life.
They have, like our families, who not long ago had the same wishes to live their lives free of war and persecution.
Just like our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents desired, they now desire to raise their children in freedom.
This is the Saturday Morning Fun Club, which occurs right under our roof on most Saturday mornings during the school year. How very proud we should all be to be able to perform the wonderful mitzvah of teaching others on Shabbat, and maybe even learn a thing or two ourselves!
