L’Taken

Confirmation RAC Trip to Washington, D.C

One of the most exciting parts of the confirmation program at Temple Emanu-El  is the trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the L’Taken Seminar. All students are expected to participate in L’Taken.

L’Taken (which means “to repair,” and makes reference to the concept of tikkun olam, “repairing the world”) is a program that explores Judaism’s take on social justice. L’Taken provides us with the opportunity to introduce our students to a compelling model for incorporating Jewish values into their lives. L’Taken is run by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (the “RAC”). For more info on the RAC, visit www.rac.org.

During the L’Taken program, students will learn from experts about various issue areas — ranging from global AIDS to women’s rights, from Israel to environmental and economic justice — all selected based on Congress’ current legislative agenda. Participants also visit the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and celebrate Havdallah at one of DC’s memorials. The weekend culminates on Capitol Hill where students lobby their representatives on the issues that matter to them, putting into practice all they’ve learned.
